Good Shepherd Ministries

Good Shepherd Ministries offers a day shelter for Wilmington's homeless and near homeless population, providing breakfast, showers, lockers, phone messages, clothing exchange and protection from inclement weather. The soup kitchen provides a hot meal Monday through Friday and bag lunches on Saturday to over 100 men and women daily. The Job Program connects individuals with day labor and longer term work opportunities. The Transitional Housing program helps men and women to stabilize their living situations and to get back on their feet again.  For more information on Good Shepherd Ministries, contact Verna Mansfield at 763-4424.

Notes First Baptist's Tommy Millard: "Volunteering at the Good Shepherd House is a rewarding experience.  I try to put a smile on everyone's face as I "meet and greet."  To see the people smile back and share a story has truly blessed my life.  I pray that for one hour on Thursdays I can be the presence of Christ by loving and caring for our Good Shepherd family."

Ways to Serve

Interested in helping out at Good Shepherd?  Here are a few ways to serve...Serve now
Soup Kitchen - two dozen volunteers prepare and serve approximately 500 meals daily.

Second Helpings - pick up surplus food from grocery stores, restaurants and bakeries.  Help is also needed in sorting and distributing food.  Volunteers should be able to lift 20-60 pounds as well as be familiar with Wilmington area.

Day Shelter/Jobs Program Support - a great deal of support is needed in carrying out an array of activities, including transportation, monitoring and activity direction/skilled service provision.

Night Shelter - providing a place of safety for up to 118 individuals and families each night requires assistance in monitoring, reception, overnight supervision and organizing clean up.

Ashley Center & Fourth Quarter - Good Shepherd operates two transitional living programs for formerly homeless people who are striving toward re-entering mainstream life.  Immediate needs in this area include transportation provision and on-call availability.

Administration/Maintenance Support - individuals with experience in skilled trades (ie. plumbing, landscaping, auto repair) and those able to help with general building maintenance are needed.  The administrative staff also welcomes groups of individuals willing to facilitate/manage supply drives and those who can help with bulk mailings and general clerical work.
