Holy Week Events

Holy Week 2010

As we prepare for Holy Week and Easter, we are encouraged to devote time to prayer and self-examination.  Join our journey through Jesus’ last week on earth.  We begin with Palm Sunday worship, remember Jesus’ final gathering with his disciples on Maundy Thursday, and his suffering, crucifixion and death on Good Friday.  On Easter Sunday morning we gather at Airlie Gardens for a sunrise service proclaiming our Lord’s resurrection!  Easter Sunday worship continues downtown at 8:50 a.m. and 11:10 a.m., celebrating the  great promise of new life that we gain in the resurrection.

Observances of Holy Week at First Baptist begin with Palm Sunday worship on Sunday, March 28th.  The Journey service begins at 8:50 a.m., while the Traditional service begins at 11:10 a.m.

A Maundy Thursday Communion service will be held Thursday, April 1, at 7:30 p.m.  The Chancel Choir and members of deepwater will lead us in our time of worship.  Dr. Queen will bring a devotion and we will remember together the events of that night as we come to the table for Holy Communion.  Reflection stations, including the large wooden cross on which we can nail our confessions and prayers, will be set up in the sanctuary to assist in our meditation and self- examination as we prepare our hearts and minds for the events of Good Friday and the hope of resurrection.

The Good Friday Tenebrae service on April 2 will be led by the Chancel Choir and Chamber Ensemble.  This service of darkness commemorating the last hours of Jesus’ life begins at 7:30 p.m.

Easter Sunday worship begins at 7 a.m. on April 4th with our Sunrise Service at Airlie Gardens.  We gather beneath the large oak tree to worship and celebrate the first light of the resurrection.

Easter Sunday services will be held downtown at 8:50 a.m. and 11:10 a.m.  Baptisms of several new believers will be held that day.

A special Children’s Easter Celebration takes place during the Sunday School hour.  All children ages 3-6th grade should report to their Sunday School rooms by 10:10 a.m.  Children ages 3 years-kindergarten will be picked up from their regular Sunday School rooms.  First through sixth graders will be picked up from the Chapel at 11 a.m.

Worship

Worship is the cornerstone of all services at First Baptist Church.  Both our Journey service and our Traditional service utilize music, prayer and the pastor's sermon to bring worship and praise to the Living God.

The Journey service is held at 8:50 a.m. and is the more casual of the two services.  Our praise band utilizes contemporary music to usher us into the presence of God, and then we enjoy a practical, multi-media presentation from our pastor.  Worshipers can feel free to raise or clap their hands to the music as an expression of praise to God.  Some prefer to stand quietly, embracing the wonder of His awesome presence.  You are welcome to worship the living God in a manner authentic to you.

Traditional Worshipis held at 11:10 a.m. and follows a time-honored style of praise and worship to God.  Our Chancel Choir leads a worship time filled with familiar hymns.  We join our voices in the call to worship and the Lord's Prayer and our pastor brings the sermon. Following the Traditional service, a visitor's reception is held in the church parlor, allowing folks to meet the church staff and FBC members.
