UPDATE AUGUST 19, 2021
|Dear First Baptist Family,|
I write to you on behalf of the Leadership Council. Our council met last night, and while it was a difficult decision for some on the committee, we remained united in our purpose for the welfare of our church in agreeing to follow the New Hanover County mask mandate due to the recent surge of the COVID Delta variant in the Cape Fear region. We came to this decision through prayer and discussion.
Most of you are aware that as of this week, New Hanover Regional Medical Center has over 100 cases of the Delta Variant impacting children and adults of all ages. While we realize that masks might not provide full protection, they are an important step in our overall public health effort to combat this virus.
As a Leadership Council, we want to continue worshipping together in person and we feel this is the safest way to proceed. Many other churches in the community are in agreement. Recently, one of our sister churches in the Cooperative Baptist family of North Carolina had a COVID outbreak in a Sunday School class. The lessons from this congregation’s experience helped our team during our decision-making process. The Leadership Council will continue to meet weekly to reassess the masking decision in hopes that the variant cases will subside.
We love our church family and want to keep each one of you safe from this virus.
Mary Claire Barnhill
FBC Leadership Council Chair
