Becoming a Christian is the beginning of the Christian life. It is the first step on a long and exciting journey with God – the one who made you, the one who has a purpose for your life, and the one who loves you more deeply than you could ever imagine. Below are some thoughts on what it means to become a Christian.

The search for God and the struggle for faith are paths that we move along at our own pace and through our individual experiences. You might find some helpful resources on the Questions page. Know that we are here to help you along that faith journey – not to tell you what to believe, but to share our experiences with you. Don’t ever hesitate to contact us if we can be of help.

One Perspective

Becoming a Christian is about understanding who God is and who we are because of him.

Becoming a Christian means that you recognize that God created you in his own image. You are special and unique simply because God created you. But we do not always live like godly people. We can be selfish or greedy or spiteful. We’ve done things in our lives that we are ashamed of. In the church we call this sin, and sin separates us from God.

When you are separated from God, life is confusing; it doesn’t make any sense. Or maybe life seems great. You are successful, happy, enjoying yourself. You feel like you have it all – and at the same time feel like something is missing. It’s a disconnect. We are disconnected from the one who knows the reason why we were created; the one who can help us to find the real purpose for our lives.

When you are separated from God, life is lonely. You can be surrounded by people and still feel alone. You can fill up your life with work or relationships or partying or busyness – but it is always there. That is because God created you to love him. No one else or nothing else will fill that void in your life. God is the only one who can make you complete.

The good news is that, while sin separates us from God, God wants to restore that relationship. He offers forgiveness. He wipes the slate clean. What he asks of us is that we acknowledge that he is God. Not just any God, but the God who became a human being, Jesus Christ, and lived and breathed and walked on this earth so that we could know him and connect with him.

As a human person, Jesus showed us how to live a life that pleases God. He cared for the sick and the poor and the lowly – showing us that God’s priorities are not always the same as the world’s priorities.

Jesus willingly suffered a painful death on a cross. In three days, God demonstrated his power, raising him back to life again. No power is greater than God’s. And no love is greater either. Jesus loved us enough to die so that we might know the love and power of God; that we might acknowledge who God is and be connected to him forever.

As people of God, as followers of Jesus Christ, we rely on God’s power every day to live in ways that honor God and value people; to live into the real purposes for which we were created.

We pray that you will choose to put your faith and trust in God through Jesus Christ. If you this is something that you would like to explore further, we would consider it a privilege to talk with you. Please feel free to call or email any one of us on the church staff. God bless you.
