As an ancient rite of the Church, baptism is a visible sign
of a person’s identification with Jesus Christ and with the
community of believers – the Church. It is a ritual that symbolizes
the spiritual cleansing of grace and the new life that we have through
belief in Jesus Christ and the power of his Spirit.
Believer’s Baptism
Baptists practice ‘believer’s baptism,’ meaning
that baptism is reserved for those who make their own personal profession
of faith in Christ. At First Baptist Church, baptism is done by
immersion, meaning that a person is submerged under water, as opposed
to aspersion, or sprinkling, as many churches practice.
If you have questions about baptism or would like to be baptized,
you may contact any of the staff ministers by email or by telephone,

with one of them after a worship service in the Visitors
Reception.

Becoming a Christian
Infant Baptism
Infant baptism is not practiced in the Baptist church. We do, however,
share in a service of Parent/Child Dedication
where parents and the congregation covenant together to nurture
in the Christian faith the children presented for dedication that
one day they might claim that faith for themselves and become candidates
for baptism. To request more information on presenting a child for
dedication, contact Jeannie Troutman, Director of Children’s
Ministry, at (910) 763-2471 or jtroutman@fbcwilmington.org.
