Rick Warren’s book, The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth Am I Here For? is a guide to a 40-day spiritual journey of discovering the answers to some of life’s greatest questions.

The Question of Existence: Why am I alive?

The Question of Significance: Does my life matter?

The Question of Purpose: What on earth am I here for?

Living out the purposes you were created for moves you beyond mere survival and success to a life of significance- the life you were meant to live.

Below you will find brief excerpts introducing the ‘5 purposes’ taken from The Purpose Driven Life: What on Earth am I Here For? By Rick Warren– You are encouraged to pick up your free copy on Sunday mornings beginning August 25 so that you can join our church-wide study as together we seek to understand more fully our purpose individually and as a church.

First Purpose: To offer real WORSHIP

We were Planned for God’s Pleasure

Psalm 149.4 – The Lord takes pleasure in His people.

Questions to Consider:

  • Which is more pleasing to God right now: My public worship or my private worship? What will I do about this?
  • Since God knows what is best, in what areas of my life do I need to trust Him most?

Points to Ponder:

  • I was planned for God’s pleasure.
  • God wants all of me.

Second Purpose: To enjoy real FELLOWSHIP

We are formed for God’s family

Romans 12.5 – Christ makes us one body … connected to each other.

Question to Consider:

  • Does my level of involvement in my church demonstrate that I love and am committed to God’s family?

Points to Ponder:

  • Your spiritual family is even more important than your physical family because it will last forever.
  • I am called to belong, not just believe.

Third Purpose: To learn real DISCIPLESHIP

We were created to become like Christ

Colossians 2.7 – Let your roots grow down into Christ and draw up nourishment from Him. See that you go on growing in the Lord, and become strong and vigorous in the truth.

Question to Consider:

  • In what area of my life do I need to ask for the Spirit’s power to be like Christ today?

Points to Ponder:

  • It’s never too late to start growing.
  • The truth transforms me.

Fourth Purpose: To practice real MINISTRY

We were shaped for serving God

1 Corinthians 3.5-6 – We are simply God’s servants … each one of us does the work which the Lord gave him to do. I planted the seed, Apollos watered the plant, but it was God who made the plant grow.

Question to Consider:

  • What God-given ability or personal experience can I offer my church, community, and world?

Points to Ponder:

  • Service is not optional.
  • God deserves my best.

Fifth Purpose: To live out real MISSION

We were made for a mission

I John 5.10 – Those who believe in the Son of God have the testimony of God in them.

Questions to Consider:

  • As I reflect on my personal story, who does God want me to share it with?
  • What can we do together to help fulfill The Great Commission?

Points to Ponder:

  • God wants to say something to the world through me.
  • The Great Commission is my commission.
