“In the Boat with Jesus” | Mark 4:35-41 | Rev. John Daniels

The disciples found themselves caught out at sea in the middle of a frightening storm. Jesus easily calms the storm but his real desire is to calm the fear in his followers. There are lessons we can learn from Jesus and Disciples as they are in the boat together. Following Jesus is not always smooth sailing. Fear, anxiety and difficulty happen and what should we do in their midst? What will Jesus do? How do we live our lives here and now?

Often we assume that we are the ones responsible for making things happen in our lives; even when it comes to our faith. What if this is not true? What if faith is a gift to be received not a goal to be accomplished? And what if the parable of the Mustard Seed is not about the size of the seed or our faith but rather about the “hiddenness” of faith and the underlying work of God in our lives? Can we really trust that God is the creator and sustainer of the Universe? Even our lives?

Although Jesus drew large crowds wherever he went, there were many who were skeptical of his message.  Even his family seemed to have doubts about his ministry.  Jesus makes it clear who really belongs to the family of God.
