Over twenty-five years ago, I was told that, due to my traumatic brain injury, I would never be able to complete a college education. This infuriated me, so I applied to the University of Mount Olive (formerly Mount Olive College). I graduated with honors.
Due to my TBI, I complete a psychological evaluation every five years to ensure I don’t have any significant changes. Again, my doctor told me I probably could not continue my education.
Coming from a Christian family, they all agreed that I could do anything I set my mind to do. Hence, I applied for graduate school and completed my master’s degree in criminal justice. I started teaching online, continued my education, and completed my doctorate in psychology in 2019. I beat all the odds. Having such an incredible support system (God, church, family, and friends), I have been able to do what I have always wanted: to teach.
I have been teaching since 2014. Since academia is such a competitive field, having enough classes has always been a concern, as I am an adjunct faculty member. However, when I received my star (Education), I had no idea what God had in store for me. As I got my courses for the fall semester, I began receiving more classes and was asked to design new courses. “My cup runneth over.”
I keep my star (Education) across from my desk in my office and thank God for all the opportunities He has given me to do His will. I had no idea I would become an educator, nor did I think I would like teaching, but I love it.
