Rooted & Built: Preparing for God’s Good Future (August 2026 Update)

Next month, our congregation begins an important season in the life of First Baptist.

Through our Rooted & Built capital campaign, we will be invited to remember the faithfulness of those who prepared this church for us—and to consider how God is calling us to prepare it for those who will come after us.

Beginning September 13, our worship services will guide us through a seven-week journey. We will reflect on the roots that have sustained our congregation, the people whose generosity has shaped us, the faith we have inherited, and the future God is inviting us to build together. We will also hear stories through video from members of our church family about why this project matters and what it can make possible for our children, students, adults, and the wider Wilmington community.

On October 11, we will observe Pledge Sunday, when each household will be invited to make a financial commitment to the campaign. Then, on October 25, we will gather for Celebration Sunday, giving thanks for the generosity of our congregation and for what God is accomplishing through us.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $17.5 million. That is an enormous number, and we want to be honest about what it will take to move forward faithfully and responsibly.

Before construction can begin, we realistically need to raise $8-10 million. The more money we have available at the beginning of the project, the less we will need to borrow through construction loans. This will significantly reduce interest and financing costs, allowing more of every gift to go directly toward the building and its ministries.

For that reason, we are asking those who can prayerfully consider giving 50 percent of their commitment at the beginning of the campaign, with the remaining 50 percent given over the following three years. Early gifts will provide the resources necessary to begin construction and help us avoid unnecessary borrowing expenses.

We also understand that not everyone will be able to structure a gift in this way. Every household has different circumstances, responsibilities, and resources. This campaign is not about equal gifts; it is about equal sacrifice. Whatever you are able to give—whether large or small—will be deeply appreciated. Every commitment matters because this vision requires all of us.

I also recognize that a commitment of this nature may raise personal questions or require thoughtful conversation. If you would like to speak with me confidentially about the campaign, your family’s circumstances, or how you might participate, I am open and available. Please contact me.

Most importantly, we ask you to begin praying now.

Pray for wisdom for our church leaders and campaign teams. Pray for generosity and courage throughout our congregation. Pray for the children, students, and adults whose lives will be shaped within these new spaces. And pray about the part God may be inviting you to play.

This is more than a construction project. It is an opportunity to remain deeply rooted in the love of Christ while building toward God’s good future. Generations before us planted trees beneath whose shade we now gather. This is our moment to do the same—to offer what we can so that those who come after us will have a place to learn, worship, serve, belong, and encounter the transforming love of God.

May we enter this season with gratitude for where we have been, faith for where God is leading, and a shared commitment to be rooted and built up in Christ.
