“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” – Philippians 4:13

I had the honor and privilege of working for Hall of Fame coach Kay Yow for five years at NC State. Coach Yow was more than a legendary coach—she was a faithful servant of the Lord. Every practice began and ended with prayer, and her words always reminded us that basketball was just a platform to live out our faith.

There was one practice in 2007 that I’ll never forget. We were preparing to face our rival, the #2-ranked UNC Tar Heels. Coach Yow was in the fight of her life with breast cancer, yet she never missed a practice. That day, after undergoing chemotherapy earlier, she suddenly collapsed on the court. As the medical staff rushed to her side, our team huddled together in prayer.

What happened next was remarkable. The energy in the gym lifted, and practice grew more spirited than ever. You could feel God’s presence in that moment. Though Coach Yow was being taken out on a stretcher, there was a peace and reassurance that she would be okay—and that God was in control.

Coach Yow’s life reflected her favorite verse, Philippians 4:13. She faced trials with unwavering faith, strength, and grace. Her example reminds me that no matter what challenges we face, we are never alone. Christ gives us the strength to persevere, to lead with courage, and to trust His plan even in our weakest moments.
